Profile

This is the second instalment of our series [OS (Orient Star) Style] in which we ask popular stylists to recommend new Orient Star models. This time we are featuring the M42 Diver 1964 2nd Edition F6 Date 200m Titanium 60th Anniversary Edition.

Modelling the divers’ watch for us today is Takuro Tsuchida, a stylist known for his work in magazines and commercials. We asked him to talk us through how he matched the watch with his personal style, as well as his impression of the M42 Diver 1964 2nd Edition F6 Date 200m Titanium 60th Anniversary Edition.

Takuro Tsuchida: Born 1984. After working as an assistant to Hiroshi Morioka, a fashion director and stylist, he became a freelance stylist in 2013 and has since been working on commercials, lifestyle magazines such as ENGINE, and as a stylist for actors and celebrities.

Above all, it’s light!

“The first outfit consists of a denim shirt, a faux mouton vest, and camo pants to create a playful style. I usually travel everywhere by car, so I prefer outfits that are comfortable to drive in. Down vests are also good, but lighter vests like this one are especially convenient to move around in. Speaking of moving around, this watch is astonishingly light despite its relatively large size (note: case diameter of 41 mm) and noticeable presence! Some mechanical watches have a hefty weight to them which I like, but you can’t beat the comfort of a light watch. Lightness is all the more attractive when it’s a watch you wear daily.”

“This model celebrates the 60th anniversary of Orient’s first divers’ watch released in 1964. I love the timeless nature of this design. I think that timeless designs like this watch, or my Jeep Wrangler for example, are your best bet in terms of one’s daily gear.”

I want to wear it to death!

“The second outfit features a rider jacket made of vegetable-tanned leather. I deliberately chose this colour over black leather because I wanted to avoid the “tough guy” look. It’s also why I opted to wear a turtleneck inside to add a touch of elegance. This veg-tan leather jacket is one that I’ve been trying to deliberately age by doing things like drying it out in the sun to give it a naturally worn look. This divers’ watch is made of titanium and comes with protective coating, making it scratch resistant. However, even if it does get scratched here and there, I can wear it without worrying too much as I want to enjoy the aging process. I bet the watch would pair extremely well with vintage denim pants and jackets as well.”

Perfect for any occasion!

Mr. Tsuchida, who is often asked to style business attire such as suits, says “Sporty watches such as divers’ watches used to be frowned upon in business settings, but this design is simple enough to wear with a jacket, especially nowadays when casual business attire is becoming the norm. I think the watch is great to wear for a range of daily occasions.”

The M42 Diver 1964 2nd Edition F6 Date 200m Titanium 60th Anniversary Edition will no doubt appeal to vintage-savvy watch connoisseurs, but we also recommend this model for mechanical watch beginners.

Exquisite pairing of colours

The current regular model (photo above = RK-AU0701B *exclusive to Japan) features a matte grey colour with glossy, sunburst finish, whereas the 60th anniversary model features a muted charcoal grey colour adorned with a more matte vertical hairline finish. Both models’ hands are adorned with hairline finish, but are silver-coloured on the regular model and gold-coloured on the anniversary model.

The colour of the Orient Star logo and specifications at 6 o’clock has also been changed from silver on the regular model (photo above: RK-AU0701B *exclusive to Japan) to a gold colour.

The silver-coloured matte scale and numbers on the aluminium insert (regular model RK-AU0701B *exclusive to Japan) have also been replaced with an elegant gold colour on the anniversary model. The differences are obvious when the models are placed side-by-side, and both are equally attractive.

Made from titanium!

Thanks to the titanium case and bracelet, the model weighs just 113 grams – roughly 35 percent lighter than the 175-gram stainless steel models.

Titanium is not only hypoallergenic, but the protective coating offers excellent scratch resistance.
