In this series, we introduce employees and their favourite Orient Star models. This month we welcome T from the WP MD Section who is in charge of marketing in Japan. As a product, watches appeal to the customer’s senses. T identifies the emotions that users seek to fulfil through their watches and creates marketing around product and services accordingly. We asked T about her favourite watch, the next model that she is eyeing for, and what she focuses on when choosing a watch from a female's point of view.

  • T, WP MD Section

  • ● Recently interested in = Momoiro Clover Z
I’ve been a fan of Momoiro Clover, a Japanese girls group, for the past decade. I can even dance to their choreography! I’ve also been into hot yoga for just as long.

  • ● Favourite food = Muscat grapes
I like all fruit, but Shine Muscat grapes are the absolute best. They’re delicious as is, but I also like to freeze them! My love for fruit stems from the fact that I’m from Yamanashi Prefecture. Growing up, we always ate a lot of peaches and grapes.

Q1 Tell us the name of your favourite watch.

It’s sadly been discontinued, but it’s the Classic Semi Skeleton (model RK-ND0008L). It was first released in 2019, and when I saw it for the first time, I immediately thought “I want that!”

Q2 What attracted you to the watch?

First of all, the round silhouette is cute. The radiant semi skeleton dial is beautiful as well. I also like the colour scheme that combines elegant pink gold and silver colours that aren’t too glitzy with a versatile navy dial that goes with any outfit. I think it pairs best with business casual attire for the office.

Q3 What are your thoughts on the watch after using it?

Because it’s a mechanical watch, there’s no need to replace the battery – you just have to wind up the mainspring and it will start moving. I like the process of adjusting the time because it allows me to take a moment to thank the watch for accompanying me on another day of hard work. I feel like I’ve experienced first-hand the adage about getting emotionally attached to things that require more work. Also, there still aren’t many women who wear mechanical watches on a daily basis, so it’s a good conversation starter.

Q4 If you were to buy another watch, what would it be?

The Classic Semi Skeleton (model RE-ND0010G). Like my current watch, I like it for its user-friendliness and styling versatility. The champagne gold colour goes with everything, and the leather strap has a distinct feel to it. It doesn’t follow any particular trend, so I think it’s a timeless piece.

Q5
What makes Orient Star so appealing?

The brand offers many authentic, domestically manufactured mechanical watches that are reasonably priced, so it’s a great way to try one out if you’re new to mechanical watches. I think male customers will find our edgy, sharp designs attractive, while women may find that wearing an Orient Star watch will attract positive comments like “So, you like watches?” “Is it a mechanical watch?” “You’ve got great taste!”

Q6 Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Last year, I received my grandmother’s watch as a keepsake. I got it serviced, and now I’m the one wearing it. It’s easy to opt for something trendy and cheap in this age of abundance, but my grandmother’s watch reaffirmed my belief that good watches can be passed down from generation to generation and be worn for many years.

● Editor’s note

Interviewing T and hearing about her point of view as a woman gave us an opportunity to rediscover the diverse ways in which women can choose and enjoy watches. It also reminded us of the importance of offering emotional value to users in addition to functionality and quality. This month’s portrait was taken at the office in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The view from the thirty-second floor overlooking the Japan National Stadium and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden was stunning!
